In this Beyond the Bounce feature, Jennifer Wise shares her journey of resilience and motherhood after a life-changing amputation. With honesty and humor, she reflects on faith, recovery, and how her son became her biggest motivation to keep moving — proving that even after loss, joy and purpose can rise again.

Jennifer Wise has learned that some of life’s biggest challenges bring the deepest growth. In 2020, what began as a fight for survival led to an unthinkable moment — a below-knee amputation (BKA) that would change her life forever. But through faith, motherhood, and fierce determination, Jen has turned her story into one of gratitude and strength.

Q: Can you give us some insight into your BKA and how it felt to go through that?

We all take losses in different forms — accidents, illness, or circumstances beyond our control. The important part is that we don’t give up, no matter how many tries it takes or how many falls we break along the way.

Being an amputee has changed my life. Of course, if I’d had the choice back in 2020, I would’ve kept my leg — but that wasn’t an option if I wanted to live. I remember my mom cried more than I did when the doctors gave us the news. By then, I was already three months deep in the hospital, just off life support. At that point, what else could I do? I was just thankful to be alive.

Q: How has your mental well-being changed since you’ve been able to walk again?

I’m thankful every day that I woke up. I remember praying, “God, take my foot but don’t take my life.” I had a brand-new baby boy waiting for me at home, and I’m so thankful that I lived to be his mom.

Being able to walk again gave me back independence, but more importantly, it restored my hope. On the days when my mental health wasn’t great or I didn’t want to do anything, my son grounded me. He reminded me why I needed to stay present, keep moving, and be grateful for the life I still have.

Q: How would you describe your spiritual and mental health before and after your procedure?

Before, I was just surviving. After, I began truly living. My faith and perspective changed completely — I learned to see life as a blessing, not a burden. Spiritually, I’ve grown stronger. Mentally, I’ve learned to accept myself and find peace in my “new me.”

What once felt like punishment turned into a blessing. I don’t even recognize the girl I was back in 2020 — the resentment, the fear — all of that has transformed into gratitude and growth.

Q: How would you describe being a boy mom while dealing with physical health challenges?

It’s been the biggest gift. Being a boy mom gave me purpose when I needed it most. Kids have this amazing way of reminding you that life keeps moving — and that you can, too.

Having spaces like Bounce Empire, where my son can run wild and play, has been a game-changer for both of us. Watching him have fun while I regain mobility has been healing in more ways than one.

Q: How has your relationship grown with your son since your BKA?

Our bond is unbreakable. He knows how strong his mom is — and how hard I’ve fought to stay that way. I tell him often how much he’s helped me become comfortable in my “new me.”

What I once thought was a curse has become a blessing. Sure, I lost something, but I’ve gained so much more — spiritual growth, emotional strength, and perspective. Life is what you make it, and I’ve chosen to make mine good.

For Jennifer Wise, loss became a new beginning — a story of resilience, faith, and unconditional love between a mother and her son. Her journey reminds us that even in life’s hardest moments, joy can still find a way in.
