We caught up with Leah Drost, lead singer of the Colorado-based band Capture This, to talk about her journey into music, the band’s origins, and how songwriting has become both a creative outlet and a path to healing.

Q: You recently released a new track Shouldn’t Be… off your new EP Tangled and filmed it at Bounce Empire on the 360-degree hydraulic LED stage, how was that experience?

Filming Shouldn’t Be… at Bounce Empire was incredible—the 360° LED stage brought our vision to life in ways we couldn’t have imagined. Huge thanks to Jason, Brad, and the entire team for making it an unforgettable shoot in one of the most creative venues near Denver and Boulder—a space that’s not just epic for filming, but amazing for the whole family.

Q: What was the first moment you knew you’d want to pursue a career in music?

When I auditioned for American Idol in San Diego. It was my first taste of singing and doing what I love in a professional environment. After that audition, I walked away thinking, “Man, I could do this the rest of my life.” It’s a healthy addiction.

Q: How did you meet your bandmates?

We all met on Craigslist. Saying that every time never gets old because it’s the most unexpected answer — but it’s true!

Q: How did you come up with the name “Capture This”?

Me and our guitarist were sitting in a room writing down every possible name. We narrowed it down to our top three, but “Capture This” just kept standing out. Something about it screamed “band name.” It felt like us — like our sound and our energy.

Q: What artist inspires you the most?

That’s always such a hard question because each of us has different musical influences. If I had to pick one that inspires the whole band, I’d say Mayday Parade. Personally, I’ve always admired Demi Lovato. I look up to her confidence and powerhouse vocals — she’s the kind of artist who makes you want to be brave enough to tell your story through music.

Q: What themes do you tend to write songs about?

Anything that has to do with acceptance and growth. Writing lyrics is therapeutic for me — it’s a way to get the thoughts out of my head and onto paper.

Lately, I’ve gone through some big life changes, and writing has been a way to process those experiences. It helps me reflect and remember how far I’ve come. My goal is always to connect with listeners who might be feeling the same way — to remind them that they’re not alone.

For Leah Drost and Capture This, music is more than performance — it’s connection. From an unexpected Craigslist meeting to songs rooted in honesty and self-discovery, Leah’s voice has become a reflection of resilience, growth, and the magic of finding your people through music.
